Guide
Kevin Karlson has been looking at birds for most of his life. You might already know the name from his books, his photos, or from a festival where he gave a talk that ran longer than planned because nobody wanted him to stop. He has spent decades in the field, and it shows in the way he watches. Slow, quiet, patient. He is the kind of birder who will stand on a dike for twenty minutes just to get a better look at a flock of peeps instead of checking them off and moving on.
His teaching style is calm and generous. He does not talk down to anyone, and he does not try to impress. If you are new to birding, he will walk you through the basics without making you feel like you should already know them. If you have been at it for years, he will still find something to show you that you have not noticed before. That is the part people remember, the small details. The way a wing pattern shifts in the light. The way a shorebird feeds. The way a raptor holds its head when it is about to move.
Kevin has written and photographed for a number of birding publications over the years, and he is a regular at festivals and gatherings across the country. His field notes are as much about the places as they are about the birds. A morning on a mudflat, a long drive to a ridgeline, a cold cup of coffee at a hawk watch. He remembers those things. He thinks they matter.
Ask him what keeps him going back out, year after year, and he will shrug and say something simple. You never know what the day will bring. A new bird, a new behavior, or just a new way of seeing something you thought you already knew.
Kevin leads a handful of BRANT tours and workshops each year. If you want to join him in the field, drop us a line through the contact page and we will be happy to share what is coming up.
