For me, it all started at Bosque del Apache NWR when I was about 10 years old. My grandmother, an avid birder, drug me out to the dawn flyout on a cold November morning during the Festival of the Cranes. I waited as patiently as 10 year old boy could on the deck that morning, straining my eyes to try and glimpse whatever creatures lay resting on the marsh in front of me. As the sun began to rise the birds grew louder and louder until any hope of a conversation amungst those who were watching evaporated into the sound scape. The light turned orange, then purple, then a blazing red, engulfing the morning fog in flame. Suddenly, with the energy of a battlefield, thousands upon thousands of geese and cranes exploded from their nighttime roosts and rose upward into the air to fight against the now golden rays of the sun. In that moment, amongst the deafening cacophony of honks, cackles, and trumpets I lost my breath, gaping mouth open at the scene in front of me. A minute later it was over but as I watched those birds soaring through the morning, my heart and soul flew with them and has been flying ever since; floating across the landscape in search of freedom, love, and life.
Ever since then I have immersed myself in nature. Guiding, research, conservation, you name it. To me, the thrill of sharing the natural world with others is the most rewarding and addictive aspect of guiding. I can’t help but feed off the excitement, energy, and wonder of my participant’s experiences! And it’s those experiences that are so important to instill the value of the natural world in others. Nothing can beat simply experiencing the world through nature.
