Here’s the situation: It’s January in Florida, it’s a little colder than one might like but hey, you’re on a sandy beach and there’s Thai food in your future. The falling sun is giving way to bands of coral clouds and thirty thousand gulls swirl about overhead for as far as the eye can see. The whole scene is a bit overwhelming really. How will you ever sort through these notoriously challenging birds? While you’re standing there looking puzzled and perplexed the flock has landed at your feet, almost too close to focus. The gigantic mass of birds sits this way for hours, allowing for prolonged study at close range, before flying out beyond the breakers to roost for the evening. These winter flocks can harbor 11 regular species of gulls, multiple hybrids, and the occasional vagrant, making for a unique learning experience. If that doesn’t quite do it for you maybe the Parasitic and Pomarine Jaegers strafing gulls at close range is more your cup of tea. No matter what you’re into it’s sure to be a memorable and educational experience. Join the flock and let’s head for the beach.
