Dave Krueper is a nongame avian biologist working for the US Fish & Wildlife Service based in Albuquerque, NM. He graduated with honors from Humboldt State University in 1982, majoring in Wildlife Management with an emphasis in avian ecology. Early in his career, he worked as an avian and fisheries biologist for the US Forest Service in Southeast Alaska on the Tongass National Forest while based in Petersburg. After that, he traveled to Europe and the Middle East with only a backpack for four months, then moved to Southeastern Arizona to ranch-sit. After several months as a volunteer, he was hired by the Bureau of Land Management as a biologist, which eventually transitioned into becoming the agency’s only Senior Avian Technical Specialist. After working for 15 years on the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area in southern Arizona, he accepted a job with the US Fish & Wildlife Service in the Regional Office for Region 2, where he has responsibility for avian conservation issues in Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.
Dave has been an avid birder for over 30 years, and has visited 5 continents and 27 countries during that time. He has led birding tours to Alaska, California, New Mexico, Arizona, Florida, western Mexico, Cuba and Trinidad & Tobago. His passion is avian biology, systematics, and distribution of birds of the New World tropics, and recently has become involved in photography. He is the current President of New Mexico Ornithological Society, and is a past President of Western Field Ornithologists.
